Our History

We've come along way in just a few years. Here is a time line of the success we have had at WJA.

  • 2001 WJA is founded by the Jesuit communities in Washington, DC, who asked themselves "What more can we do to serve economically poor children?"
  • 2002 WJA opens its doors to its first class of 6th graders
  • 2004 WJA moves to its permanent home on Varnum Street
  • 2005 WJA's first class graduates from 8th grade
  • 2008 WJA enters a partnership with DC Central Kitchen's Fresh Start Catering to take our breakfasts, lunches and dinners to a new level of nutrition
  • 2009 WJA's first class graduates from high school
  • 2010 WJA dedicates Ruppert Field
  • 2011 WJA celebrates 10 years of leadership in urban education
