What WJA folks say about the retreat program

“I think when you get to your eighth grade year… when you’re looking over your three years here…probably retreats will be at the top of your list of the most fun things you’ve ever done here.”

- WJA 8th grader to a WJA 6th grader

“It was a wonderful retreat for me and I was just glad to see that the program we provided for them worked and showed growth … I don’t think I’ll ever forget these moments.”

- WJA staff member

So Many Things to DO!

Once the academic day at WJA ends, the fun continues!  Check out all the things our students can do...

Retreats

Washington Jesuit Academy promotes spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical growth, and the retreat program is an integral part of spiritual formation. Retreats are privileged experiences of stepping away from life’s regular activities in order to encounter God more intensely and to reflect, pray, and grow together. All students participate in different overnight retreats each semester. Topics of discussion include the purpose of our lives and God’s mercy. Away from the regular school schedule and setting, students can grow even closer to God and to one another.

WJA retreats are not just for students. Seventh grade families are invited to participate in an interfaith family retreat. A day of recollection is also offered for parents and guardians. Retreats are arranged for staff members, twice a year, and for the Board of Directors, once a year.

Service Opportunities for students at Washington Jesuit Academy

There are many opportunities for student service learning at the Washington Jesuit Academy. Every Wednesday a different group of 8-10 students walk across the back parking lot to Carroll Manor Nursing Home to spend time with the residents there during their break. This gives the boys an opportunity to interact with a generation of folks different from themselves. While the boys are initially a bit hesitant to venture outside of their comfort zone, they consistently return feeling enthusiastic about the experience.

In addition, each month each advisory group makes lunches for the homeless. They organize the effort to collect various food and drinks, then they spend an advisory period making the lunches which they personally deliver to the homeless during their lunch/recess period. Again, students embrace this opportunity to serve those who are less fortunate than they are.

WJA also has a Service Committee that meets during their lunch period approximately once a month to discuss, plan, organize other service opportunities for the school. This may also include doing some fundraising to fund the projects or donations they decide to implement.

Afternoon Clubs

Twice a week students have the opportunity to participate in extra curricular clubs.

Here are just a few they can choose from:

  • Debate Team
  • Cooking Club
  • Gardening Club
  • Pulse Dance or Pulse Drawing Club
  • Philanthropy Club
  • Geography Bee
  • And many more!
