Alice Waters Visits WJA
She’s been heralded by 50 Best Restaurants as “the mother of American food.” She pioneered the farm-to-table movement and has advocated for the use of fresh, organic and locally-grown ingredients in school lunches. She is world renowned chef and food activist Alice Waters, and in January, she visited the Academy to learn more about our food program.
Ms. Waters toured WJA’s kitchen, connected with chef Allison Sosna of DC Central Kitchen, and learned about our mission to serve healthy alternatives to the traditional “school lunch.” She also met with WJA’s Gardening and Cooking Club and their advisor, math teacher Ms. Rosie MacInnes.
“It was such an honor to connect with Ms. Waters,” recalls Ms. MacInnes. “She didn’t know this at the time, but I consult her Edible Schoolyard Program website frequently for resources and ideas to use with our students. She has already had a huge influence on our program.”
