WJA Names New Headmaster

The Washington Jesuit Academy is pleased to announce that Marcus C. Washington has been selected by WJA’s President, William Whitaker, and Board of Directors to serve as its third Headmaster.

“I am excited to have Marcus take over the role of Headmaster at the Academy,” said Mr. Whitaker.  “As a DC native and a product of Catholic school education, Marcus understands the young men we serve and is fully prepared to embrace both the opportunities and challenges ahead of the Academy as we continue to grow and expand.  He is a person of integrity who operates from a clear sense of his values and those in line with our Ignatian way.  Marcus has the vision, desire and commitment necessary to lead WJA into the future.”

Mr. Washington is a graduate of Gonzaga College High School and the College of William and Mary.  He has two Masters Degrees in Secondary Education and Educational Leadership from Marymount University and The George Washington University, respectively.  He taught 6th grade at The Potomac School and American history and government at Gonzaga for four years and also has significant coaching experience.  Mr. Washington has been serving as WJA’s Assistant Headmaster during the 2010-2011 academic year.  He will replace current Headmaster Joseph Powers, who will serve as the next Head of School at the Woods Academy in Bethesda, MD.

Mr. Washington stated, “I am truly honored to be serving as the next Headmaster of the Washington Jesuit Academy.  Our community is made possible through the selfless contributions of a great number of extremely dedicated people.  I sincerely believe in the Jesuit mission of leading boys as they become ‘Men for Others’ and look forward to the continued growth of this fine institution.’

Brian Becker is slated to replace Mr. Washington as WJA’s new Assistant Headmaster.
